@MUCrusadersVB falls on senior day, looks forward to conference tournament

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match to Aquinas College on senior day at the MU Activities Center on Saturday afternoon. This loss concludes the regular season for the Crusaders with a record of 22-11 overall and 11-9 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while Aquinas improves to 30-6 and 17-3 in conference play.

The Crusaders finish the season as the sixth seed in the WHAC and will travel to Sylvania, Ohio to face third-seeded Lourdes University in the first round of the WHAC tournament. Aquinas, the regular season champion, earned the top seed and will host Siena Heights. The tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Madonna won the first set, 25-21, hitting .226 and using late game heroics by Erica LaBaere and Taylor Suurmeyer to put the first game out of reach.

  • The Saints responded with a late surge in the second game that saw them take five of the final seven points in the set to even the match at one set apiece.

  • The Crusaders responded with a dominant 25-18 performance in the third game. Tied at 15-15, kills from Jodie Kelly and LaBaere along with a big block by Nyla Greer swung the momentum in the Blue and Gold's favor, ultimately securing the final point off another kill from LaBaere.

  • The Saints answered with a 25-12 fourth game victory that sent the match into a fifth set.

  • Despite a five-point swing thanks to Kelly and LaBaere that put the Crusaders ahead 11-7, a late offensive surge from Aquinas saw the Saints take the final eight points of the match, handing the Crusaders the loss.
