No. 21 Lawrence Tech overpowers @MUCrusadersWBB, 65-37

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University women's basketball team could not keep up with the high powered offense of No. 21 Lawrence Tech University in a 65-37 loss on Wednesday night at the MU Activities Center. The Crusaders fall to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Blue Devils improve to 6-2 and 1-1 in WHAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders got off to a slow start as the Blue Devils jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Hannah Reinhold knocked down a deep three-pointer to reduce the deficit. The Blue Devils continued to pressure, going on a 9-2 offensive run in the next five minutes, ending the quarter with a score of 16-5 in favor of LTU.

  • Sheldon Bochenek and Emily Huff opened the scoring for MU in the second quarter with back to back layups before Claire LeRoux nailed a three-pointer to decrease the LTU to 15 points. MU continued to battle as Cierra von Zittwitz and Julia Bogart tallied the final six points of the half, trailing 39-18 entering halftime.

  • The Blue and Gold came out of the break hot with a 7-4 offensive run thanks to buckets by von Zittwitz and LeRoux. Trailing 45-24 with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter, the Crusaders continued to fight, although LTU pulled ahead 56-30 at the buzzer.

  • A 9-7 fourth quarter accounted for the final margin with a Sydney Brown free throw the final point of the contest with 1:39 to play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Madonna finished the contest 14-of-56 (25%) from the floor which included a 1-for-11 mark in the first quarter. The Crusaders were 5-of-17 (29.4%) from the 3-point arc and 4-of-14 (28.6%) at the free throw line. LTU finished 25-of-63 (39.7%) from the field, 9-of-25 (36%) from long range and 6-of-8 (75%) at the charity stripe.

  • LeRoux finished with a team-high 11 points while Bogart added seven

  • Huff led Mu with eight rebounds and added six points

  • Kendall Fisher led the visitors with 20 points

  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 as they host Lourdes University at the MU Activities Center. Tip off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
