UPLAND, Ind. – Playing an NAIA top-20 program for the second straight day at the Taylor University Tip-Off Classic, the Madonna University women's basketball team once again kept the game close, but the 19th-ranked Trojans, the tournament host, pulled away late in a 73-54 loss at Olde Arena on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Crusaders to 0-2 on the year while Taylor moves to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED

A Naomi Davis 3-pointer stopped a 4-0 Trojans run to begin the contest and, after the home team went ahead 8-3, a trio of free throws from Sheldon Bochenek and Davis cut the deficit to two. Taylor led by as many as seven in the first 10 minutes before Sydney Brown and Bochenek both converted in the paint for a 13-10 score after one.

Bochenek once again converted inside to make is a one-point game, but the home team scored the next nine unanswered to go up 22-12. TU led by as many as 15 before back-to-back threes from Hannah Reinhold and Lex Davis followed by a Bohenek layup cut the advantage to seven, 33-26. A three by the Trojans gave the home team a 36-26 lead at the break.

Madonna cut into the deficit with an Emily Huff 3-pointer and six points from Bochenek to make it 44-40 with 3:37 left in the third. The Blue and Gold won the quarter, 16-13, but trailed by seven 49-42, with 10 minutes to play.

Taylor opened the final period on a 15-2 run to push the lead to 20, 64-44, and effectively kill the Crusaders comeback attempt. An Ashleigh Ringstad trey with 53 seconds left accounted for the final margin.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Madonna shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from long range and 50 percent (3-of-6) from the free throw line. The Crusaders corralled 30 rebounds and scored 24 points in the paint.

Taylor finished 24-of-56 (42.9%) from the field, 8-of-30 (26.7%) from beyond the arc and 17-of-20 (85%) from the charity stripe. The home team grabbed 41 rebounds and scored 32 points in the paint.

Bochenek finished with 17 points and five rebounds while Davis added 15 points

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3 when they head to Gary, Indiana to face IU-Northwest, who received votes in the NAIA preseason poll, for a 1:30 p.m. tip.
