@MUCrusadersVB sweeps Lourdes for upset road win

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Madonna University volleyball team parlayed the momentum from an epic first set victory into a sweep of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conferences top team, Lourdes University at Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Wednesday night. The victory is the 21st on the year for the Crusaders who move to 21-9 overall and 10-7 in the WHAC while the Gray Wolves slip to 16-5 on the season and 13-3 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was an epic first set that featured 16 ties, nine lead changes and 22 extra points. Madonna sprinted out to a 9-3 lead and maintained the six-point advantage until the home team scored five straight points to make it a 16-15 match. Another 6-1 wun put Lourdes in control, 23-20, but the Crusaders responded with 5-of-6 points to become the first team to 25. The Blue and Gold had six opportunities for set point before back-to-back kills from Nyla Greer and Jodie Kelly gave MU the 37-35 win.

  • Set two featured 19 ties and 10 lead changes as the teams traded points throughout the match before a Lourdes service error tied the game at 23 then an error by the home team and a Greer, Jordyn Dawson block capped the 25-23 MU victory.

  • With momentum firmly on their side, the Crusaders dominated the third set. The Blue and Gold won five of the opening six points for a 5-1 lead then used a 5-1 run to push the margin to 16-9. Lourdes cut the lead to four, but the Crusaders finished strong and back-to-back kills by Taylor Suurmeyer and Lauren Korth sealed the match win, 25-18.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Madonna outhit Lourdes .250 (56-18-152) to .168 (47-22-149) and had more assists (50-44) while the home team collected more aces (3-2) blocks (9-6) and digs (69-66).

  • Kelly paced the offense with 20 kills and added 12 digs and three block assists

  • Erica LaBaere added 15 kills while Suurmeyer finished with nine and Greer tallied seven

  • Greer paced the block with five assists while Korth led the team with 45 assists and 14 digs

  • Alyssa Facione added 12 digs and Olivia Sweeney tallied 10

MILESTONES TO WATCH

  • Korth now has 4,290 career assists and sits 154 shy of Meg Paris (1995-96, 4,444) for fifth on the career list.

  • Korth surpassed 1,000 digs in her career and now has 1,011

  • The Blue and Gold continue their final regular season road trip on Saturday, Oct. 27 with a trip Ann Arbor to face Concordia University at 1 p.m.
