Daniel Watkins Equalizer Lifts Madonna to 1-1 Draw at Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Daniel Watkins scored the equalizer in the 67th minute as Madonna earned a 1-1 draw against Holy Cross on Thursday at Holy Cross College. Joan Arnau assisted on the tying goal, which came 16:18 after the hosts opened the scoring early in the second half.

The match remained scoreless through halftime despite Madonna producing a 5-3 advantage in shots. Afonso Henrique helped preserve the tie with saves at 10:20 and 27:54, turning away Holy Cross' first two shots on goal. Madonna also received a defensive save from Nolan Sanders during the match.

Holy Cross broke through at 50:26 when Anthony Cruz scored to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Madonna responded at 66:44, with Joan Arnau setting up Daniel Watkins for the tying finish. Daniel Watkins put both of their shots on goal and played 63 minutes, while Joan Arnau completed the full 90 minutes.

Madonna continued to press for a go-ahead goal after pulling even. Alex Peytoureau forced a save at 75:24, and Basile Lozachmeur tested Holy Cross again at 82:20. Basile Lozachmeur led Madonna with three shots, while Alex Peytoureau and Daniel Watkins each attempted two. Holy Cross goalkeeper Sam Negus made two saves, and the home side added three defensive saves.

Madonna finished with a 12-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Afonso Henrique completed all 90 minutes with two saves, allowing only the second-half goal. Neither team scored over the final 23:16, and Madonna Bernardo Teston's header wide right at 88:30 marked Madonna's final recorded chance to break the deadlock.

The Crusaders will be back in action on Wednesday, August 26th as they host their home opener against Goshen College. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM.
