Madonna drops 7-4 decision to Doane after fifth-inning swing

LINCOLN, Neb.-- Madonna carried a three-run lead into the middle innings, but Doane flipped the game with a three-run fifth and went on to hand the Crusaders a 7-4 loss Wednesday in a neutral-site game at Sherman Field in Lincoln, Neb.

The decisive stretch came after Madonna had built a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third. Ty Stepek opened the scoring with an RBI single that brought home Luke Spicer, and Kooper Etheridge followed with another run-scoring single. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Stepek to score for the Crusaders' third run. Doane answered with a run in the bottom half, then pulled even and moved in front in the fifth. Carter Roth singled home Max Harris to make it 3-2, Jett Grossart added a game-tying RBI single, and Brayden Jones brought in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice.

Madonna stayed within striking distance into the late innings. Doane added an unearned run in the seventh, but the Crusaders cut the deficit to 5-4 in the eighth when Kevin Davis reached on a throwing error and Ty Rowe scored on the play. Doane responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI double from Grant Sommers and another RBI single from Grossart to restore a three-run margin.

Stepek, Aamir Mitchell and Etheridge each collected two hits for Madonna, with Stepek finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Mitchell went 2-for-4 and scored once, while Etheridge also finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Crusaders totaled eight hits and left six runners on base.

On the mound, Dustin Cummins worked the first 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Matthew Sevensma took the loss in relief after allowing three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts. Doane starter Broc Songster went eight innings for the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out six. Grossart led Doane's offense by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Roth added two hits and two RBIs as Doane finished with 12 hits.

The loss came after a promising start for Madonna, which controlled the early innings with its three-run third. But Doane's fifth-inning rally changed the game, and the host side added enough late offense to keep the Crusaders from completing a comeback.

The Crusaders will return in 2027.
