Crusaders sweep the Saints in Livonia

LIVONIA, Mich.---
GAME 1

Madonna scored in five of the first six innings and pulled away for an 8-2 win over Siena Heights on Sunday at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich., with Aamir Mitchell's two-run home run in the fifth providing the biggest late jolt. The Crusaders finished with 11 hits, built a 6-1 lead before the homer, and stayed in control throughout the afternoon.

Madonna set the tone in the first inning. Luke Spicer scored the game's first run on Kooper Etheridge's sacrifice fly, and the Crusaders added another when Donovan Thompson reached on an error and an unearned run came home for a 2-0 lead. Siena Heights answered in the second on Zander Zeiter's solo home run to right, but Madonna responded immediately with two more runs in the bottom half to make it 4-1.

The offense kept moving from there. Logan Ellis lifted a sacrifice fly in the third to extend the lead to 5-1, and Kevin Davis singled in a run in the fourth. Mitchell then delivered the decisive swing in the fifth, sending a two-run shot to left-center for an 8-1 advantage. Madonna's lineup also pressured Siena Heights on the bases, stealing five bags and drawing five walks.

GAME 2:
Madonna broke open a tight game with a four-run third inning and went on to beat Siena Heights 9-1 on Sunday at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich. The decisive stretch came after the Saints grabbed an early lead, as Kooper Etheridge delivered a two-run triple and Donovan Thompson followed with a two-run home run to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 Madonna advantage.

Siena Heights scored its only run in the first inning when Braxton Mustiful singled to shortstop, bringing home Kaleb Woods for a 1-0 lead. Madonna answered two innings later and never let the game tighten again. Etheridge's triple sparked the rally, and Thompson's homer immediately added to it, giving the Crusaders control. Madonna finished with nine runs on nine hits, while also drawing nine walks.

The Crusaders kept adding on in the later innings. Ty Stepek tripled to right field in the sixth to score Luke Spicer and make it 5-1. In the seventh, Brett Reed came home on a sacrifice groundout by Logan Ellis, with the run scoring unearned. Madonna then put the game out of reach in the eighth, when Thompson lined a two-run single and Gus Simon added an RBI single as the lead grew to 9-1.
Thompson led Madonna's offense by going 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Etheridge drove in two runs, tripled and walked twice. Stepek added Madonna's second triple of the afternoon. The Crusaders struck out only three times as a team and consistently pressured Siena Heights pitching, which threw 165 pitches and allowed nine walks.

On the mound, Madonna starter David Zilch earned the win after working 3.2 innings. He allowed three hits and one run, walked two and struck out four. Pearson Mendiuk took the loss for Siena Heights after allowing four runs on three hits across five innings, with six walks and one strikeout. Siena Heights finished with six hits, including a two-hit game from Jack Semler, but could not build on its first-inning run as Madonna's staff kept the Saints off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
