Madonna Splits Tightly Contested Doubleheader with Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, KYMadonna erased an early deficit with two runs in the fifth inning and made that rally stand up Wednesday morning, edging Cumberlands (KY) 2-1.

GAME 1:
The decisive sequence came in the bottom of the fifth, when Faith Cramton delivered a run-scoring double to tie the game and Rylee Fitzpatrick followed with a sacrifice fly that pushed the Crusaders in front for good.

Cumberlands grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. Grace Ross singled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Emily Delgado's sacrifice fly to left. That was the only run Madonna allowed all game, and it went down as unearned. From there, the Crusaders settled in and kept the Patriots off the board the rest of the way.
The breakthrough came after four scoreless innings against Cumberlands starter Jessica Cord, who worked all seven innings. Ashley Rosiewicz came around to score on Cramton's double, tying the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Brynn Anteau scored on Fitzpatrick's sacrifice fly to left, giving Madonna its first lead at 2-1. The Crusaders finished with four hits, four walks and two hit batters, creating just enough traffic to break through in the fifth.
Madonna's pitching was the difference after the early run. Camille Oyer worked the first five innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while walking one and striking out two on 61 pitches. Anna Battagin closed out the final two innings, permitting no hits and no runs with one walk and one strikeout over 28 pitches. Together, the Crusaders limited Cumberlands to three hits and protected the one-run margin late.
The defensive effort supported that work in the circle. Madonna played error-free softball, a key detail in a tight game where every baserunner mattered. Cumberlands managed only 19 at-bats and left three runners on base, while the Crusaders avoided giving away extra chances after the first inning.
Cramton and Fitzpatrick supplied the two RBIs Madonna needed, and the pitching staff handled the rest. In a game that stayed tense from the opening inning through the final out, the Crusaders found their answer in the fifth and then closed the door.

GAME 2:
Madonna nearly erased a four-run deficit in its final at-bat Wednesday, but Cumberlands (KY) held on for a 5-4 softball win in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Crusaders scored three times in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run into the late-game push before the Patriots closed out the seven-inning game.
Madonna struck first in the opening inning. Brynn Anteau doubled to right-center, and Faith Cramton followed with an RBI double to left to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Cumberlands answered in the bottom half when Grace Ross doubled, moved up on a bunt and later stole home to tie the game at 1-1.
The Patriots took control in the third. Emily Delgado delivered a two-run single to left that put Cumberlands ahead 3-1, and the margin stayed there until the sixth. That is when Jae Jae Phillips connected on a two-run home run, extending the lead to 5-1 and creating the decisive cushion.
Madonna still had plenty of offense left. The Crusaders finished with 10 hits and no errors, while also taking advantage of two Cumberlands errors. Rylee Fitzpatrick paced Madonna by going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Anteau added two hits, one RBI and two runs scored, continuing to set the tone near the top of the lineup.
The seventh inning nearly changed the outcome. Anteau singled down the line to score Regan Finkbeiner and cut the deficit to 5-2. Rylee Fitzpatrick then brought home Ashley Rosiewicz on a fielder's choice, and Ella Thomas followed with an RBI single that scored Anteau and trimmed the margin to one. Madonna left 10 runners on base in the game, a number that underscored how many scoring chances the Crusaders created throughout the afternoon.
Cumberlands finished with 12 hits, led by Ross, who had two hits, a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Phillips drove in two with her homer, and Delgado also collected two RBIs. Madonna's late surge made the final inning tense, but the Crusaders' comeback stopped one run short after a game that featured an early lead, a long middle stretch controlled by the Patriots and one last push in the seventh.
