Madonna Offense Powers to Sweep of Lawrence Tech

LIVONIA, Mich - Madonna erased Lawrence Tech's comeback attempt with a decisive response in the sixth inning, then survived a tense final frame for a 12-11 win Sunday in a seven-inning game in Livonia.

GAME 1:
After the Blue Devils pulled even at 8-8 with a five-run top of the sixth, the Crusaders answered immediately when Aamir Mitchell launched a three-run home run and a later wild pitch brought home another run, restoring control at 12-8.

The Crusaders set the tone early by scoring twice in the first. Luke Spicer supplied one of those runs with a solo home run to left field, giving Madonna a 2-1 lead. The game turned sharply in the bottom of the fourth, when Madonna broke it open with six runs. Ty Stepek delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, a four-RBI homer to left that capped the inning and pushed the Crusaders in front 8-2.
Lawrence Tech did not go away. The Blue Devils scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, then surged back in the sixth. Luke Weinberger drove in a run during the rally, and Brady Rogers added a run-producing single in an inning that included two runs on one ball to left, one of them scoring on an error, as Lawrence Tech pulled level at 8-8. Rogers was a constant problem for Madonna's pitching staff, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs, four runs scored and a double. Justin Baird also had three hits for Lawrence Tech, drove in two runs, walked twice and stole a base.
Madonna's offense was efficient throughout, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits and leaving only two runners on base. Mitchell finished with two hits, four RBIs, a homer, a double and two walks, while Stepek matched him with four RBIs on two hits. The Crusaders also got a three-homer day as a team, with Spicer's first-inning shot joining the long balls from Stepek and Mitchell. That power helped offset Lawrence Tech's 13-hit afternoon.
The final inning still brought pressure. Lawrence Tech scored three times in the seventh, the last run coming on Rogers' RBI fielder's choice that trimmed the margin to 12-11. Madonna held the lead from there and, as the home team, did not need to bat in the bottom half. Jacob Kowalski earned the win in relief for the Crusaders, while Nick McCormick took the loss for Lawrence Tech.

GAME 2:
Madonna University broke the game open in the first inning and never let Lawrence Tech recover, rolling to a 20-6 win in seven innings Sunday at Livonia, Michigan. The decisive stretch came immediately after the Blue Devils scored in the top of the first, when the Crusaders answered with seven runs in the bottom half and set the tone for an afternoon that ended with 20 runs on 17 hits.
Lawrence Tech took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Madonna responded with its biggest early blow of the day. Gus Simon delivered a two-run double during the seven-run outburst, and the inning also included additional scoring on a wild pitch and an error. Luke Spicer added RBIs in the frame as the Crusaders quickly moved in front 7-1.
The Blue Devils made a push in the second inning, scoring three times to trim the margin to 7-4. Andrew Gingle doubled home a run, and Brady Lee followed with a two-run single. Madonna answered again in the third, extending the lead to 10-4 on a Kevin Davis double and another two-run double from Simon. The Crusaders added four more runs in the fourth, including a two-RBI play when Spicer reached on an error that brought home two unearned runs.
Spicer finished with three hits and five RBIs to lead Madonna's lineup, while Aamir Mitchell had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Logan Ellis added two hits, scored three times and knocked in two runs. Kevin Davis also played a key role in the middle innings as Madonna kept applying pressure with extra-base hits and productive at-bats. The Crusaders totaled five doubles, one home run and five walks while leaving only four runners on base.
On the mound, Ethan Gajewski gave Madonna a steady six-inning start and earned the win. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Lawrence Tech managed nine hits overall and got a solo home run from Ty Schornak in the fifth inning, but the Blue Devils could not slow Madonna's offense. Brady Lee drove in two runs for Lawrence Tech, which was charged with two errors and saw its pitchers allow 16 earned runs.
Madonna put the finishing touch on the game with a six-run sixth inning to reach the 20-run mark. Kevin Davis singled during the rally, Mitchell ripped a two-run double, and the Crusaders continued to capitalize on hits and wild pitches as the gap grew to 20-6. By the end of the afternoon, Madonna had scored in four different innings, turning an early response in the first into a lopsided home win.
