Crusaders Split Series with Yellow Jackets

LIVONIA, Mich. — Trey Acker tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout and Aamir Mitchell fueled the offense with four hits as Madonna rolled to an 8-0 win over Defiance College (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1:
The Crusaders seized control immediately with a three-run first inning and never let Defiance back into the game. Madonna struck for runs in four of six offensive frames, backing Acker with 12 hits while playing error-free defense. Acker faced just 25 batters in the seven-inning contest and closed it out himself in the seventh to secure the run-rule shutout.
Madonna set the tone in the bottom of the first. Kooper Etheridge opened the inning with a triple, and Mitchell quickly drove him in with an RBI double to left-center. Carson Noon followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, and a wild pitch from Defiance starter Blake Bowman brought home another run, staking the Crusaders to a 3-0 advantage before Acker returned to the mound.
Mitchell struck again in the third with a solo home run to left field, pushing the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Chase Gabel doubled and came around to score on an RBI double from Gus Simon, stretching the margin to 5-0. Madonna continued to apply pressure in the fifth when Luke Spicer singled, drew his way on base twice overall and used his speed on the bases to ignite another rally. Simon singled in a run and Jason Serafinchon followed with an RBI single, chasing Bowman and making it 7-0 after 4 2/3 innings.
The Crusaders capped the scoring in the sixth. Mitchell reached on a single, advanced to third on an aggressive baserunning sequence that included a steal, and scored on a Noon RBI single to right to make it 8-0. Madonna finished with three doubles, a triple and a home run while also swiping eight bases, consistently putting Defiance's pitching and defense under pressure. Defiance committed two errors and managed only two baserunners left on base.
On the mound, Acker was in command throughout. The right-hander allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings, striking out six and walking one on 87 pitches. He retired the side in the seventh to finish the complete game and lower Defiance's chances of mounting any late-inning threat. Madonna's staff line reflected the dominance: seven innings, three hits, no runs, one walk and six strikeouts.
Offensively, Mitchell led the way by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Simon added two hits and two RBI, while Spicer contributed two hits, two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI. Bowman took the loss for Defiance, working 4 2/3 innings and allowing 10 hits, seven runs, two walks and three strikeouts, along with two wild pitches. James Mahon finished the game in relief but could not slow Madonna's balanced attack as the Crusaders closed out a convincing home victory.

GAME 2:
Madonna University erased most of an early five-run deficit and brought the tying run to the plate in the late innings, but Defiance College (Ohio) held on for a 7-6 win.
Defiance built what proved to be the decisive cushion in the first two innings, striking for three runs in the first and three more in the second to go up 6-2. The Yellow Jackets added another in the third for a 7-2 lead before the Crusaders' bullpen settled in and the offense began to chip away. Madonna scored in five different innings and had the potential tying run on base in the eighth, but could not complete the comeback.
Aamir Mitchell led the Crusaders' offense, going 3-for-3 with a triple and a hit-by-pitch while sparking multiple rallies. In the bottom of the first, Mitchell tripled to right-center and came home on a double by Chase Gabel. Later in the frame, Gus Simon doubled to left-center to bring in a pinch-runner, quickly slicing Defiance's opening 3-0 burst to 3-2. Mitchell tripled again in the third and scored on another Gabel double to cut the margin to 7-3.
Madonna continued to grind back into the game in the middle innings. In the fifth, Kooper Etheridge drove a solo home run to center field to bring the Crusaders within 7-4. Etheridge finished 1-for-3 with the home run, two runs scored and two walks, reaching base three times and helping keep pressure on the Defiance staff. The Crusaders totaled 10 hits, including three doubles and a triple, and drew five walks while leaving nine runners on base.
The Crusaders' late push came in the seventh and eighth. Luke Ellis doubled and later scored on a passed ball in the seventh, trimming the deficit to 7-5. In the eighth, Madonna pulled within one when Ty Stepek reached on a fielder's choice that forced out a runner at second but allowed Luke Spicer to score, making it 7-6. Defiance's bullpen, however, recorded the final outs to strand the tying run and preserve the one-run decision.
On the mound, Madonna used multiple pitchers, including relief work from Graham Sim and Joseph O'Neil after Defiance's early surge. The staff settled in after the third inning, holding Defiance scoreless over the final six frames and giving the offense a chance to rally. Defiance finished with seven runs on nine hits and left eight runners on base; both teams committed two errors.
Defiance starter Aiden Behrman earned the win after working 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts on 96 pitches. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were paced by Anthony Silvera Jr. (2 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBI, 1 hit-by-pitch) and Bradyn Shaw (2 hits, 2 runs, triple, 1 RBI). After the loss, the Crusaders can take positives from the balanced offensive production and resilient bullpen performance as they look ahead to the remainder of the early-season schedule.
