Crusaders Explode for 29 Goals in Road Win at Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Madonna University used a dominant second quarter and a relentless offensive attack to overwhelm Montreat (N.C.) 29-10 in nonconference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders effectively decided the game in the second quarter, outscoring Montreat 15-5 in the frame to turn a 7-1 first-quarter cushion into a 22-6 halftime lead. Carter Borsos capped the decisive surge with a goal at the buzzer, sending Madonna into the break up by 16 and firmly in control.
Madonna finished with 62 shots, including 43 on goal, and saw its scoring spread across the roster. Rico Hart led the way with four goals on six shots, while Cooper Regimbal added three goals and an assist. Jackson Gradstein and Reid Dunavant fueled the attack as well, with Gradstein posting two goals and two assists and Dunavant chipping in three goals and two assists, including an early second-quarter strike that pushed the margin to 8-1.
The Crusaders dictated possession throughout, winning 33 faceoffs to Montreat's nine and collecting 71 ground balls to the Cavaliers' 37. That advantage in the middle of the field allowed Madonna to sustain pressure, build long stretches of offensive zone time and convert three times on seven man-up opportunities. The Crusaders also generated 17 assists on their 29 goals, underscoring the balance and ball movement in the offensive end.

Madonna's defense and goalkeeping backed up the offensive outburst. Goalie Jonathan Bendfeldt went the distance in net, recording 19 saves against 29 shots on goal from Montreat. The Crusaders held the Cavaliers to two goals or fewer in each quarter and matched Montreat's man-up production despite being whistled for 10 penalties, totaling seven minutes in the box.

After Hart's first-quarter goal made it 7-1 late in the opening frame, the Crusaders continued to pile on. Matthew DiSalle opened the third quarter with another Madonna tally, and Marcus Villagomez and Andrew Marszalek added second-half goals as the visitors pushed the margin as high as 20. Montreat converted two power-play goals in the fourth quarter, including one by Gavin Mottram, but the outcome had long been settled.
With the win, Madonna capped a high-scoring afternoon that featured 39 combined goals in front of 139 spectators. The Crusaders' combination of faceoff dominance, balanced scoring and steady goaltending provided a comprehensive road performance as the team looks to build momentum heading into the heart of its schedule.
