Crusaders Roll to Road Win at Michigan-Dearborn Behind Fast Start

LIVONIA, Mich. — A nine-goal first quarter set the tone as Madonna University overwhelmed Michigan-Dearborn 27-5 on Saturday afternoon, riding a dominant offensive display and commanding faceoff performance to a road victory.
The Crusaders seized control immediately, scoring the game's first nine goals and never allowing the Wolverines to recover. Madonna led 9-0 after the first quarter and 19-3 at halftime after piling up 10 goals in the second quarter. The visitors closed out the win by outscoring Michigan-Dearborn 2-2 in the third and 6-0 in the fourth to finish with their 27-goal total.
Madonna's attack was both explosive and balanced, with Rico Hart and Marcus Villagomez each scoring four goals to pace the offense. Benjamin Reidy added three goals and two assists, while Matthew DiSalle also recorded a hat trick. The Crusaders finished with 68 total shots, including 47 on goal, routinely breaking down the Michigan-Dearborn defense and capitalizing on extra-man opportunities with five power-play goals.
The early surge began with DiSalle's opener at 14:21 of the first quarter, assisted by Jackson Gradstein. Reidy and Spencer Guppy quickly followed to make it 3-0, and Hart pushed the margin to 4-0 less than three minutes in. Guppy and DiSalle each struck again later in the quarter as Madonna built its 9-0 cushion. Ryan Davis opened the second quarter with a goal at 14:46, and after Michigan-Dearborn finally got on the board through Aidan Meyers, the Crusaders responded with a flurry that included man-up conversions from Reidy and Carter Borsos to extend the lead to 19-3 by the break.
Villagomez took over after halftime, scoring twice early in the third quarter — including one assisted by Borsos — to push the margin to 21-3. Michigan-Dearborn's Jeremy Fancett and Meyers answered, with Meyers' second goal coming on a man-up opportunity, but those would be the final tallies of the day for the hosts. Madonna locked down defensively in the fourth quarter while continuing to produce on offense, getting goals from Villagomez, Ethan Solis, Brayden Hering, Carter Kleis and Cameron Mason to close out the 27-5 result.
The Crusaders controlled the game at the faceoff X, winning 26 of 36 draws to maintain possession and fuel their high shot volume. Madonna also finished with 47 ground balls and converted 21 clears, limiting Michigan-Dearborn to 17 total shots, 11 of which were on goal. Crusader goalkeeping turned aside six shots while allowing five goals over 60 minutes.
In addition to the four-goal efforts from Hart and Villagomez, Reidy's three goals and two assists, DiSalle's three goals, and Borsos' one goal and three assists highlighted a deep offensive showing. Michigan-Dearborn managed two power-play goals and collected 29 ground balls but was hampered by 30 turnovers and a 20-save workload for its goalie against Madonna's sustained pressure.
