DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Crusaders finished their weekend in spectacular fashion, dismantling Mount Mercy University 14-3 on Sunday afternoon at the St. Ambrose Dome. The victory capped off a perfect 4-0 road trip for the Crusaders, who showcased a relentless offensive attack that generated 14 hits in just four innings of play.
Mount Mercy took a brief lead in the top of the first inning, plating two runs, but the Crusaders responded immediately. In the bottom of the first, Madonna surged ahead with three runs of their own. The rally was fueled by a sacrifice fly from
Faith Cramton and a two-out, two-run triple by
Ella Thomas, setting the tone for the afternoon.
After adding another run in the second, the Madonna offense completely overwhelmed the Mustangs in the third inning. The Crusaders sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs to break the game open. Key highlights included a two-RBI single by
Regan Finkbeiner and a bases-clearing double by
Brynn Anteau. By the time the third inning concluded, Madonna held a commanding 13-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Carson Kulhmann added a final insurance run with a sacrifice fly that brought home
Skylar Spisz.
Laci Harris earned the win in the circle for Madonna, pitching four effective innings. While she allowed three runs, she kept the Mustang hitters off balance, scattering six hits and striking out five.
Jessica Dunkel entered in the fifth inning to close out the run-rule victory, retiring the side to finalize the sweep.
The Crusaders' box score featured contributions from up and down the lineup. Anteau finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Thomas and Finkbeiner each drove in two runs. The middle of the order was particularly effective, with
Olivia Salinas and
Lucy Bennin both recording multi-hit games and scoring twice.
With the 14-3 win, Madonna heads back to Michigan with an unblemished 10-0 record, having outscored their opponents 40-7 over the course of the two-day tournament. The Crusaders will be back in action when they travel to Melbourne, Florida to take on a handful of new opponents this season. Over this span, the Crusaders will play 12 games over six days, before reutrning home to begin WHAC Conference play.
