Madonna Falls 17-7 to Trine in Home Opener

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Trine used a fast start and sustained offensive pressure to hand Madonna a 17-7 defeat in nonconference women's lacrosse action Saturday morning in Livonia, Mich. The Thunder opened with five unanswered first-quarter goals and never trailed, limiting the Crusaders to a single first-half tally while building a 10-2 advantage at the break.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After Trine struck first at 8:42 of the opening quarter, the visitors continued to pull away, converting a free-position attempt late in the frame to cap a 5-0 start. Madonna broke through early in the second quarter when Abigail Magda scored at 12:07 off a feed from Madi Conrad to make it 6-1, but Trine answered with three straight goals to restore control. Conrad added a late strike with nine seconds left in the half, assisted by Ri O'Connor, to send Madonna into halftime trailing 10-2.

The Crusaders found more rhythm offensively after the break, matching Trine with five goals over the final 30 minutes. Conrad sparked the third-quarter push with her second of the day at 9:47, assisted by Bana Kadi, and Erika Hernandez followed at 7:46 on a setup from Emma Volpe to trim the margin to 11-4. In the fourth quarter, Volpe converted at 12:15 on another feed from Kadi, and freshman Adrianna Kennedy closed the scoring with 19 seconds remaining, finishing a Volpe assist to set the final at 17-7.

Madonna generated more chances as the game progressed, finishing with seven goals on 22 shots, including 16 on target, and assisting on all seven tallies. Conrad led the Crusaders' attack with two goals and an assist, playing a role in both of Madonna's second-quarter scores and jump-starting the team out of halftime. Volpe turned in a strong playmaking effort with one goal and two assists, factoring into three of Madonna's four second-half goals, while Kadi added two assists from the midfield.

In the defensive end, goalkeeper Olivia Vitantonio faced a heavy workload against a Trine offense that finished with 39 shots and 35 on goal. Vitantonio recorded 18 saves while going the full 60 minutes, helping Madonna settle in after the early Trine surge and limiting the Thunder to three goals in the third quarter. The Crusaders also cut down on turnovers compared with Trine, committing seven to the visitors' six while continuing to battle on the defensive side despite the early deficit.

Trine's attack was paced by Erin Fariello with six goals and two assists, while Sydney Weiss and Izabelle Dominski added hat-trick support in key stretches. The Thunder also held a 15-9 edge in draw controls, aiding their possession advantage.

UP NEXT:

Madonna will look to build on its second-half response, ball movement and assisted scoring efforts as the schedule continues, with the Crusaders aiming to carry Saturday's offensive improvements into their next outing which is next Saturday, February 28th as they return home to face Alma College. The game is set to begin at 11:00 AM.
