Doss, Liedel Power Madonna Past Cornerstone 84-79 on the Road

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Madonna University rode a hot first half and clutch late-game shooting from Makyle Doss and Joey Liedel to an 84-79 road win over Cornerstone (MI) on Wednesday night at Mol Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders built what proved to be a decisive cushion before halftime, racing out to a 49-33 lead behind efficient perimeter shooting and an aggressive offensive attack. Doss splashed a 3-pointer during a late first-half surge, and Madonna closed the opening half with back-to-back layups from Liedel and Doss in the final seconds to push the margin to 16 at the break.

Cornerstone responded in the second half, outscoring Madonna 46-35 and steadily chipping away at the deficit. The hosts opened the half with a layup from Mark DeVries to cut the margin to 14, and by the midpoint of the second half had turned the game into a one-possession contest. Madonna regained some breathing room when DeAntwan Randall threw down a dunk with 8:51 to play for a 61-57 advantage, then Doss buried another 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark to extend the lead to 76-69.
Cornerstone mounted one final push in the closing minutes. DeVries converted on an offensive rebound with 1:46 remaining, trimming the Crusaders' lead to 76-75 and energizing the home crowd. Madonna answered on the next critical stretch, as Liedel drilled a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left to make it 79-75, then calmly knocked down free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the 84-79 result.

Doss led Madonna with a game-high 29 points in just 20 minutes, going 9-for-15 from the field, 5-for-? from 3-point range (five makes noted), and 6-for-7 at the free-throw line while adding seven rebounds. Liedel complemented that effort with 20 points, three rebounds and two made 3-pointers, finishing 7-for-15 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Randall provided balance in the frontcourt with 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting, eight rebounds and a block in a team-high 38 minutes.

As a team, the Crusaders shot 44.1% from the field (30-for-68) and 35.5% from beyond the arc, connecting on 11 3-pointers. Madonna also converted 76.5% of its free throws (13-for-17) and limited its turnovers to nine while committing just 13 personal fouls, helping manage Cornerstone's late-game rally. The Golden Eagles held a 42-34 edge on the glass but were hindered by 3-for-22 shooting (13.6%) from 3-point range.
Cornerstone was led by 20 points from Kayden Bird, who went 7-for-12 from the field, hit two 3-pointers and finished 4-for-4 at the line in 36 minutes. Blake Stewart added 17 points and a game-best nine rebounds on 7-for-16 shooting, while DeVries' late scoring and effort on the offensive glass fueled the Golden Eagles' second-half surge.
