Crusaders advance to the WHAC Championship

LIMA, OHIO. -- The Madonna University baseball team (26-25, 17-13) advanced to the WHAC semifinal after beating Lawrence Tech in the first round 10-5 after 10 innings, putting up five runs in the 10th to win. They then faced off against Northwestern Ohio and would lose which put them in the loser bracket with another matchup against the Blue Devils. The Crusaders would win that game off a homerun from Anthony Sharkas in the top of the 10th to win 10-9 which brought them to another matchup with the Northwestern Ohio (36-15, 25-6) in what would be a doubleheader where the Crusaders would need to win two against the Racers to advance to the finals. The Crusaders would beat the Racers in game one with a final of 10-6 advancing to game two. In a must win game two the Crusaders would win in walk off fashion with a final of 11-10.

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders needed the win to keep their season alive and give themselves a chance at the WHAC Championship. They had already fallen to the Racers the day before but that would not stop them from trying to run the table. The Crusaders would put the pressure on early putting up two runs in the top of the 1st inning off a Sharkas double that would bring home Kyle Revere followed by a Bobby Cavin single that would bring home Sharkas. Dustin Cummins would get the start on the mound for the Crusaders and would be able to hold the potent Racer offense at bay. Cummins would throw 6.2 innings giving up eight hits with four earned runs with one strikeout on 96 pitches. Cummins' longevity in game one would be vital for the Crusaders and would get the job done in game one. The Racers would answer in the 2nd and 3rd inning to tie the game up at two. Then the Crusaders offense would ignite, putting up seven total runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings while also adding an insurance run in the 9th to take a 10-6 victory and advance to game two. Schaefer Wiskur would come in to pick up the pivotal save for the Crusaders. But nobody had a performance quite like Pablo Rebollar who would pick up not one but two homeruns for the Crusaders in pivotal spots of the games. Rebollar would finish 2-5 with four RBI's with a solo homer in the 7th inning and a three run homer in the 8th.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Revere would go 4-6 with one RBI, 4 singles, and two runs scored.
  • Cal Fournier would go 3-4 with three singles and one run scored.
  • Nick Krol would go 3-5 with three singles and two runs scored.

Game 2:

In game two, the Crusaders looked to pull of the upset and advance to the WHAC final again. In this game the Crusaders were the home team and it would be the Racers who would strike first in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Then the Crusaders would have a huge second inning picking up five runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-1 game. From the second inning on it was a back and forth game that would lead to the top of the 9th with the Racers down one. UNOH would pick up the tying run in the top of the 9th to tie it at 10 with the Crusaders coming up to bat in the bottom of the 9th with the opportunity to walk it off.  The inning would start with a strikeout leaving the Crusaders with just two outs. Joshua Medrano would then walk and be courtesy ran for by Johnny Stepek. Luke Spicer would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to put Stepek at second with Revere coming to bat with two outs. Revere would also walk to put men on second and first with two outs with the Crusaders clutch batter the last two days in Sharkas. On the first pitch, Sharkas came up swinging and put a high chopping ground ball to the shortstop. The Racer shortstop would field it cleanly and make the throw to first where Sharkas would have beat it easily but the ball would go by the first baseman allowing Stepek to come around to score from second and giving Sharkas his second walk-off hit in two days and the Crusaders the 11-10 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sharkas would go 3-6 with 3 RBI's.
  • Medrano would go 2-4 with a 3 run homerun.
  • Avain Rivera would go 1-5 with a solo homerun.
  • Rebollar would go 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI.

UP NEXT:
