Crusaders on top of WHAC after sweep of Wolverines

LIVONIA, Mich. - Coming off their sweep of Cornerstone yesterday, the No. 20 Crusaders' softball team (28-3, 6-0) returned to University Field for another Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. This time, they faced off against the University of Michigan Dearborn Wolverines (5-17, 3-3). Taking the mound for both games of the double-header, WHAC Pitcher of the Week Maeson Schlaud led the Crusaders to victory in both, only allowing one run between the two games. Crusaders moved to 8-0 and would remain atop the WHAC.

GAME ONE:

Junior lead-off batter, Alissa Gauthier got things started for the Crusaders when she took the team's first at bat of the day over the left center fence for a solo home run.

The Crusaders would tack on a second run in the opening inning as junior infielder Emily Biggott grounded out to second, sending freshmen shortstop Ashley Rosiewicz home for the score. The Crusaders led 2-0 after one inning.

The Crusaders would explode in the second inning, jumping ahead double-digits by the time the Wolverines forced a third out. Making it through the entirety of the lineup within the inning, outfielder Faith Peschke, infielder Ella Thomas, outfielder Regan Finkbeiner, infielder Bailey Martin, catcher Mackenzie Ming, Gauthier, and Rosiewicz all contributed runs, with Thomas crossing home twice.

Following their explosive second inning, pitcher Maeson Schlaud held off the Wolverines through the remaining three innings, taking a 10-0 mercy win after the fifth inning.

Gauthier once again got the Crusaders on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning after a RBI single by Rosiewicz. Finkbeiner also made it home in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from designated player Jessica Dunkel. Crusaders led 2-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, an error by the Wolverines' third baseman led to a sacrifice bunt by Peschke turning into a three-run shot in which her, Thomas, and pinch runner Lucy Bennin all made it home. The Crusaders extended their lead to five after two innings.

The Wolverines would answer with a run in the top of the third, their first of the day. But the Crusaders would respond by putting the game away to follow. A two-run single to right field from Martin extended the lead to 7-1. Martin would then cross home herself following a wild pitch. Finkbeiner would score the final run of the day off of a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Crusaders once again closed out the Wolverines in five, taking a 9-1 win.
