Cardinals steal win with late-game comeback

LIVONIA, Mich. - For the final regular season series of the Crusaders' 2024 season, they faced off against the No. 24 ranked Cardinals of Concordia University Ann Arbor (36-11, 23-6). While the Crusaders hung with the second best team in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference early, the Cardinals would run away with the game late, taking an 8-5 win in the first of the three game series.
 
GAME ONE:

The Cardinals took an early lead as the Crusader bats warmed up. Going into the Crusaders' half of the third inning, the Cardinals led 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Crusaders would flip the script. Sophomore DH Avain Rivera got the rally started with an RBI single to bring home junior shortstop Kyle Revere. Freshman outfielder Logan Ellis then followed up with a two-run double, scoring Rivera and sophomore first base Pablo Rebollar. Crusaders took the lead, up 3-2 going into the fourth.

The Crusaders would add on another run to their lead in the sixth inning, with a solo home run from senior center fielder Cal Fournier. The Crusaders led 4-2 after six innings.

A late-game comeback would allow the Cardinals to steal back the lead in the seventh, going up 8-4 on the Crusaders going into the bottom of the eighth.

Junior second baseman for the Crusaders, Nick Krol, would score in the bottom of the eighth, but that would be all she wrote for the Crusaders as the Cardinals took game one 8-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Fournier went 3-of-4 with two RBIs and a home run.
  • Ellis went 2-of-4 with two RBIs.
  • Krol went 2-of-4 with one run.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will return to Ilitch Ballpark on Sunday, April 28th to conclude the series against the Cardinals as well as their 2024 regular season. First game of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
