Crusaders remain undefeated with sweep of Cougars

LIVONIA, Mich. - With this past Wednesday's series against Concordia Ann Arbor postponed due to weather, the No. 16 Madonna Crusaders (26-3, 14-0) returned to the University field for the first time in seven days to face the Cougars of Cleary University (13-21, 8-10). An explosive first game with two Crusader home runs would give them the win in a 7-1 showcase. In the second game, pitcher Maeson Schlaud took control, throwing 11 strikeouts and leading the Crusaders to a 3-0 shutout victory. The Crusaders remain undefeated in conference play, moving to 16-0 with three regular season series remaining.

GAME ONE:

To start the game, senior pitcher Maeson Schlaud would strikeout four of the first five batters she faced, the Cougars having no answer for her. However, the Crusader bats would need time to warm up, as the first three innings passed scoreless.

In the fourth inning, they finally warmed up, as the Crusaders would answer the Cougars' run in the top of the inning with five in the bottom. Junior catcher Mackenzie Ming got started with a solo home run with the first at bat of the Crusaders' half of the inning.

Freshmen Ella Thomas and Faith Peshke would each score runs, along with pinch-runners Lucy Benin and Jillian Harris. The Crusaders led 5-1 after four innings.

In the final inning, the Crusaders would tack on two more runs with a home run from junior Alissa Gauthier. The Crusaders would take game one of the series 7-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ming 1-of-2 with a solo home run.
  • Gauthier went 2-of-4 with one home run.
  • Peshke went 2-of-2 with two runs.
  • Schlaud threw six strikeouts in her seven innings pitched.
GAME TWO:

The Crusaders would strike first and early in game two, as sophomore DP Jessica Dunkel doubled to left field, bringing freshman outfielder Regan Finkbeiner around for the score; Madonna led 1-0.

Odd innings would favor the Crusaders as they would score once again in the third and fifth innings. A sacrifice fly-out brought Finkbeiner home in the third. A double from Gauthier would bring home Peshke to make it a 3-0 game in the fifth.

With three strikeouts in the top of the seventh to end the game, Schlaud officially hit the 200 mark on the year for the third straight season. Crusaders win 3-0 and move to 38-3 on the year while remaining undefeated in conference play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Finkbeiner went 2-of-3 with two runs.
  • Peshke went 1-of-2 with one run.
  • Schlaud threw 11 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will return to University Field tomorrow for a senior day double-header against the Grey Wolves of Lourdes University (13-26, 7-12) at 1:00 p.m.
