Anderson's record-breaking day leads to a Crusader sweep

DAVENPORT, Iowa. - The #RV Madonna Crusaders' returned to the field for their second tournament of the 2024 season this weekend. After losing to No. 24 Saint Xavier in the final game of the NAIA Leadoff Tournament, the Crusaders got a chance to redeem themselves in the opening game of the day. They were able to get their revenge with a 6-1 blowout of the No. 24 team in the country. Their second game of the day was against the Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Fighting Bees.

Game 1:

Junior outfielder Alissa Gauthier scored the first run of the game as freshman Faith Peschke brought her home with a double to left field in the top of the first. Peschke would score herself soon after as freshman shortstop Ashley Rosiewicz ripped a double to center field. Before the inning would end, the Crusaders tacked on two more RBIs with a two-run shot by catcher Mackenzie Ming. Crusaders led 4-0 after one inning.

Following the explosive first inning, the score would remain the same until the bottom of the fourth when Saint Xavier scored their first run of the game to make it 4-1.

Rosiewicz would get the Crusaders rolling again as she scored her second run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. The final run of the game would be scored by the junior pinch-runner for the Crusaders Jillian Harris in the top of the sixth. Crusaders would go on to win 6-1 and redeem themselves from their lone loss so far this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Maeson Schlaud recorded seven strikeouts and only allowed one run as she moved to 4-0 on the season.
  • Rosiewicz went 2-of-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.
  • Ming led the team with two RBIs.

GAME 2:

The Crusaders came out firing, scoring four runs in the first inning. After hitting a two-run single in the first inning, Emma Mossing would extend the Crusaders' lead with an RBI double in the third inning to make it a 5-0 game. 

The final run of the game for the Crusaders came from sophomore pinch runner Avery Beneteau to end the third inning, her first score of the season.

Pitcher Jane Anderson threw all seven innings, delivering an astounding 14 strikeouts and allowing just one run to lead the Crusaders to a 6-1 victory. Anderson's 14 strikeouts ties the record for seventh-most in school history.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Anderson delivered a career-high 14 strikeouts in a single game.
  • Mossing led the team with three RBIs.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will start the second day of the tournament tomorrow, February 18th, with another game against the Fighting Bees, followed by a matchup against Mount Marty University (S.D.).
