Crusaders sweep on last day in Iowa

DAVENPORT, Iowa. - The #RV Madonna Crusaders' returned to the field for their second tournament of the 2024 season this weekend. In their second matchup against the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees, the Crusaders took a 9-0 win to sweep the series. In their second game of the day, the Crusaders took on Mount Marty University (S.D.) and took a 4-0 win over the Lancers to head back to Michigan undefeated in Iowa.

Game 1:

After a slow start to the game the Crusaders got things going in the third inning with a two-run shot from junior outfielder Alissa Gauthier, bringing both freshman Ella Thomas and junior Jillian Harris home and putting the Crusaders on the board first. 

In the following inning, Thomas would deliver a two-run shot of her own with a single to left field that brought in freshman Regan Finkbeiner and junior catcher Mackenzie Ming, giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead after four innings.

Finkbeiner scored her second run of the game in the sixth inning off of a triple from Gauthier. Gauthier would get home herself with a single from freshman Faith Peschke with the next at-bat. 

The Crusaders would extend their lead in the top of the seventh with a triple from sophomore infielder Jessica Dunkel, bringing home Ming and senior Bailey Martin. Dunkel would go on to score the final run of the day as the Crusaders went on to take a dominant 9-0 victory and sweep the double-header against the Fighting Bees.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ming went 2-of-4 at the plate and scored two runs.
  • Dunkel and Thomas each scored two RBIs and one run.
  • Gauthier led the team with three RBIs.
  • Schlaud threw 13 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in the Crusaders' 9-0 victory.

GAME 2:

The Crusaders got the ball rolling in the second inning as senior Emily Biggott singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw and bringing in junior Gabbie Toth for the game's first run. After reaching first at the next at-bat, Jillian Harris stole second base, as Biggott stole home on the throw, extending the Crusaders' lead to 2-0 after two innings.

A Lancer error in the third inning gave Ming the chance to get home for her first run of the game and third run of the day. Peschke would score the final run of the day for the Crusaders in the fourth inning off of a single by freshman Ashley Rosiewicz. 

While the Crusaders would cool down after the fourth inning, pitcher Laci Harris and the Crusader defense would go on to shut out the Lancers and take a 4-0 win in the final game of their road trip to Iowa. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Biggott went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run and one RBI.
  • Harris threw five strikeouts and pitched a shutout in her first game on the mound this season.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will head to Arizona for their spring break trip. Their first game will be against Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday, March 2nd at 4:30 pm.
