LIVONIA, Mich. - Coming off of a five-set victory over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils, the Madonna Crusaders (11-14, 5-9) returned home to ACCU Arena to face the Cornerstone Golden Eagles (17-10, 9-6) in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. After the Golden Eagles dominated the first set, the Crusaders would knot things up with a 25-23 comeback win in the second set. After a close third set, the Golden Eagles would run away with the fourth and final set in a 3-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Golden Eagles would come out hot, running away with the first set. The Crusaders would try to get a late-rally going, making it competitive but not enough to make a comeback. The Golden Eagles would take the first set 25-17.
As the second set got underway, it initially felt like it was set up to be a repeat of the first, with the Eagles jumping ahead 8-2 early on. After taking a timeout to regroup, the Crusaders would come back out with a newfound spark. The began to creep back while it seemed the Golden Eagles were steadily growing their lead, with the game at 18-12. However, before they realized it, the Crusaders would get hot and tie the game at 19-19, leading the Golden Eagles to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Crusaders would take their first lead of the game with the second set at 20-19. With a service ace from
Kem Donnelly, the Crusaders would steal the second set with a 25-23 win.
The third set would start off the most competitive of the three sets so far, with things knotted up at 7-7 early on, with the two fighting tooth-and-nail to try and get ahead. Up 17-15, the two-point Golden Eagle lead would be the largest of the set for either team at that point, leading the Crusaders to call timeout. In the end, the Golden Eagles would pull away in the end 25-22.
