LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University Crusaders Men's Soccer Team took on the University of Concordia Cardinals (Mich) on a beautiful Saturday late-afternoon. The Crusaders had their work cut out for them today as the Cardinals brought relentless pressure. Although the Cardinals were aggressive, the Crusaders played their game and finished with a 2-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The 23
rd ranked Crusaders came into this matchup with the Concordia Cardinals being undefeated in the conference thus far and only having one loss. The Crusaders extended their record to 6-0 on the season within the WHAC and 9-1-2 overall on the season with a gritty win against the Cardinals.
In the first half, junior defender, Jhonnier Torres, buries a goal from long-range beating the goaltender to give the Crusaders the go-ahead-goal at the 39:01 minute mark. The Crusaders would end the half with a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.
About 15 minutes into the second half, senior defender,
Felipe Acherboim, executes a perfect header from the corner kick from fellow senior Andreas Gomez to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead at the 61:12 minute mark. The Cardinals pursuit of their first goal comes at the 82:36 minute mark by way of sophomore defender, Evan Lock. Although, the Cardinals closed the lead to only one goal; the Crusaders held on to defeat the Cardinals 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Crusaders recorded 28 shots with 8 being on goal.
- Andreas Gomez picked up his ninth assist of the season to continue leading the team.
- Jhonnier Torres recorded four shots with three being on goal and notched a goal.
