HOWELL, Mich. - A late goal by Cleary University allowed the Cougars to escape with a 1-0 victory past Madonna University on Wednesday night in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops the Crusaders record to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the WHAC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams were deadlocked for almost the full 90 minutes. Cleary held the edge in shots in the first half, 5-3. However Madonna held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Afonso Henrique made two saves in the opening half for the Crusaders. 

The second half played like much of the first half, as both teams traded shots on goal but couldn't put one in the back of the net. A late foul in the box with 36 seconds remaining however proved to be the difference. Henrique was assessed a red card and Atsuya Yamazaki was forced to come in and try to preserve a draw for Madonna. The Cougars Lesman Morazan put it past Yamazaki and allowed Cleary to escape with the 1-0 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 

• Henrique finished the evening with five saves.
• Cleary outshot Madonna 13-9.
• Daniel Watkins led the Crusaders with three shots.

Madonna hosts Aquinas College (Mich.) in a homecoming match at 11:30 AM Saturday from the Madonna Athletic Complex.
