Gomez Hat-Trick highlights victory over Wolverines

DEARBORN, Mich. - The Madonna men's soccer program opened WHAC play on Saturday afternoon against the University of Michigan-Dearborn. After going into halftime tied 1-1, the Crusaders scored three second half goals to claim the 4-1 conference victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Madonna struck first in the 18th minute of play, when Andres Gomez Rubiano found the back of the net with Corey Matthews assisting on the play. 34 seconds later however, the host Wolverines tied the game at 1-1. It remained 1-1 heading into the halftime break, as the Crusaders held a 6-2 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes. 

Gomez put Madonna ahead for good in the 64th minute, scoring to make it 2-1. 11 minutes later, the junior scored his third goal of the contest for his first career hat-trick. Matthews scored the final goal for the Crusaders in the 88th minute, as Madonna shutout UM-Dearborn in the second half. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Afonso Henrique made three saves for the Crusaders
  • Madonna outshot Dearborn 11-4.
  • The Crusaders are now 10-1-1 overall in the all-time series with the Wolverines.

Madonna remains on the road to face Cleary University at 7:00 PM Wednesday night.
