LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna Volleyball team proved to be triumphant in their first home game of the season against Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Ind.), scoring big with a 3-0 margin of victory against the Crimson Wave.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders, after coming off a 2-2 record from the Phoenix Classic last weekend, proved to be a major threat to the Crimson Wave. Within the first few plays of the starting set the dominant Madonna team set the tone of the match quickly, scoring the first few points of the game. It was not until later in the first set that the Calumet team would fire back, eventually putting up a few scoring plays of their own. However, their efforts would prove to fall short as the Crusaders would take the first set 25-15.
Despite their loss in the first set, Calumet opened the second set of the night with a controlling start, putting up the first few points of the half with Madonna not trailing too far behind. Going toe-to-toe with the Crusaders, the Crimson Wave would continue to outscore Madonna for much of the second half. Determined to take another victorious set, the Crusaders put forth a greater effort on their behalf, battling with the Calumet team before eventually taking the set with a 25-21 win.
After continuously putting up with the Crusaders and their threatening presence, the Calumet team kept up with the pace of Madonna once again for a hard-fought last set. While Madonna put up the first few scoring plays, Calumet did not trail too far off. With victory just in reach, the Crusaders battled back and took the last set with a victorious score of 25-18, winning their home opener with a 3-0 victory.
