WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. --  The Madonna University softball team opened up NAIA Postseason play with a 2-0 victory over No. 16 Cougars of Indiana Wesleyan University on Monday after from the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a one-two-three first inning from Maeson Schlaud, the Crusaders were able to get on the board first. With an infield RBI single, Autumn Reed brought home Jenna Gilbert. The next batter was Emily Biggott, she hit a blooper to left field that scored Reed from first. 

Schlaud was dialed in controlling most of the game. The Cougars threatened in the fourth inning, but thanks to a double-play and a Schlaud strikeout the Crusaders were able to get out of the jam. Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh, Crusaders still up 2-0, but Indiana Wesleyan had runners on second and third with one out.  

Wesleyan's Morgan Yeater sent a fly ball to left field in foul territory, Jenna Gilbert was able to make the catch and then threw an absolute missile to home plate to catch the runner tagging from third for the final out.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Schlaud threw a complete game shutout, giving up five hits and striking out seven
• Reed finished the game 1-for-2, a walk, and an RBI
• Biggott was 1-for-1, a walk, and an RBI

The Crusaders will take on the hosts and No.3 ranked Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 10:00 AM EST tomorrow morning.
