Crusaders Survive and Advance to Opening Round Final

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Madonna University softball team took on the University of the Cumberlands and USC Beaufort on day two of NAIA Opening Round action on Tuesday. The Crusaders fell to the No.3 Patriots 4-2, before rolling past the Sand Sharks later that night with an 11-1 victory.

Game 1:

The third-ranked Patriots got the scoring started with two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third. Down 3-0 in the fourth, Jessica Dunkel gave Madonna life with an RBI double that scored Gabby Toth. 

Cumberlands responded however with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 4-1. The Crusaders did their best to get back in it, as Jenna Gilbert recorded an RBI single to cut the deficit in half, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Patriots escaped with the win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Maeson Schlaud (24-5) went 4.2 innings and struck out six batters, before being relieved by Jenna Gould.
  • Gould pitched the final 1.1 innings for Madonna and struck out two. 
  • Kelsi Littleton was 3-of-3 at the plate, while Dunkel added two hits.
  • Both teams had seven hits each. 

Game 2:

Madonna scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning, highlighted by a Toth RBI single. The Crusaders blew the game open in the top of the second with six runs. Toth, Littleton, Emily Biggott, and Bailey Martin hit RBI doubles in the inning while Mackenzie Ming recorded an RBI single. 

The Crusaders added their final three runs in the top of the third, with two coming thanks to an RBI double by Ming that scored Biggott and Alissa Gauthier. USC Beaufort was no match for Schlaud (25-5) as they scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth as Madonna took the mercy rule victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Littleton and Ming had three RBIs each. 
  • Schlaud struck out five in the shortened complete game.

UP NEXT:

Madonna faces off with Cumberlands needing to beat the Patriots twice tomorrow to advance to the NAIA World Series. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 PM, with the if necessary game to follow at 3:30 PM.
