Softball Sweeps Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. - Coming off their senior day split with Aquinas College, the (RV) Madonna Crusaders Softball Team (29-11, 11-5) traveled across the state to face in-state conference opponent Siena Heights University Saints (12-28, 8-13) in a double-header. The Crusaders were carried to a big win in Game 1 led by Maeson Schlaud on the mound who threw 10 strikeouts on the way to a 6-2 victory. The Crusaders would get the sweep with a convincing 2-0 victory in Game 2. With the two victories today, they move to 13-5 in conference play with the postseason nearly here.

GAME 1:

In usual fashion, senior pitcher Maeson Schlaud was on the mound for Game 1 for the Crusaders. After a scoreless top of the first, Schlaud got the Crusaders out of the bottom of the inning in only three batters. After walking on her first plate appearance, Schoolcraft College transfer Autumn Reed would get the Crusaders' first run of the day in the top of the second off of a single from Alissa Gauthier. Crusaders led 1-0 through the second inning.

Schlaud would strike out three more batters before letting up the Saints' first and only two runs of the day following an error by the Crusaders' infield. The Crusaders would take back the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After being walked, senior Kelsi Littleton would advance into scoring position at third base following a wild pitch. Littleton was brought in for the tying run by Reed with the next pitch.

Stepping up to the plate next was sophomore Gabby Toth, who recently returned to the Crusaders' lineup from injury. Toth, who has been seeing the ball well all season, got her pitcher and drove it deep over the fence of left field for her first career home run. The strike from Toth also gave the Crusaders back the lead, up 3-2 after four.

After a quiet fifth inning, the Crusaders' bats would get hot again in the top of the sixth. Toth would continue to have a day, as a single by her turned into a double as she advanced to second on the throw. Her hit would be enough to get her second RBI of the day, as senior Jenna Gould rounded third and made it home on the play.

Gould's score led to the Saints' making a change on the mound, but it wouldn't be enough to hold off the Crusaders. With a hit up the middle, Gauthier brought Jenna Gilbert home from third as the Crusaders extended their lead to 5-2.

In the final inning, the Crusaders would lay one last blow as Littleton rattled off a double that brought Lucy Bennin home all the way from first base. The Crusaders would get the 6-2 win in Game 1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Toth brought in two RBIs and hit her first career home run.
  • Reed and Littleton each had one run and one RBI.
  • Gauthier brought in two RBIs.
  • Schlaud threw 10 strikeouts and allowed four hits throughout her nine innings pitched.

GAME 2:

Following the Game 1 win, Jane Anderson took over for Schlaud as the Crusaders' pitcher. Anderson, who played incredibly well during their matchup versus Aquinas College this past weekend, led the Crusaders to a shutout win as she only allowed one hit in her five innings pitched.

Both pitchers played incredibly well and kept the other team off base. The only two runs of the game came from the Crusaders in the top of fourth inning. With a hit into left field that was good for a double, freshman Jessica Dunkel put herself in scoring position and advanced fellow freshmen Jenalee Herbon to third. With the next at bat, Littleton advanced Dunkel to third and brought Herbon in for the run. Following a Saints' error on a hit by Jenna Gilbert, Dunkel made it home to help the Crusaders get a 2-0 win as they shut out the Saints.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Dunkel went 2-of-4 with one run.
  • Gilbert and Littleton each had one RBI.
  • Anderson allowed one hit and threw four strikeouts in her five innings pitched.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will head to Sylvania, Ohio, on Thursday, April 27th to face the Lourdes University Grey Wolves (10-26, 5-15) in their final regular season conference matchup. The first game of the double-header is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
