Madonna Falls to Aquinas, Ends Season in WHAC Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS – The Madonna University men's lacrosse team took on Aquinas College on Tuesday night in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. The host Saints came away with the 12-5 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Aquinas held the Crusaders scoreless in the first quarter and took a 2-0 lead. The Saints then added three more goals early in period number two to extend their lead to 5-0. Madonna then scored the next two goals of the contest, as Vince Floro scored the Crusaders first goal off an assist by Nick Conrad. Later in the quarter, Shane Alexander put one in the back of the net during a man-up situation to make it 5-2. After Aquinas scored to make the score 6-2, Kyle Gudme scored the final goal of the first half. The Saints took the lead into the break. 

The Saints defense stepped up in the second half, allowing only two goals by the Crusaders. Both Madonna goals in the second half came in man-up scenarios, as Floro scored his second of the game and Nick Bryden scored his only goal. Madonna was outscored 6-2 as Aquinas pulled away to move on to the WHAC Semifinals. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Jeff Varner made 17 saves in the cage.
  • Kent Westrick caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls. 
  • Aquinas outshot Madonna 49-37
