Baseball Scores 45 Runs en route to Sunday Sweep of Siena Heights

LIVONIA, Mich. -- On Sunday from Illitch Ballpark, the Madonna University baseball team took on Siena Heights University in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Crusaders rolled past the Saints, winning game one 25-2 and taking game two 20-6 via the run rule.

Game 1:

The first game of the afternoon saw the Crusader offense set a new single-game school record. Madonna hit nine home runs, besting the previous record of eight in 2004. Brady Krzciok hit three of his own, which was also a school record. The freshman finished game one with six RBIs. Kyle Revere and Anthony Sharkas each hit three-run home runs. Jace Matkin and Bobby Cavin each recorded solo shots, while Zachary Beadle hit a two-run blast.

The record-breaking home run came from Cal Fournier in the bottom of the sixth inning. The senior sent a two-run shot over the center field wall to give the Crusaders 25 runs on the day. The total runs scored is second most in school history as well.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The first inning saw Madonna score 10 runs, with nine coming from multiple three-run home runs and the other from Matkin's solo home run
  • On the mound, Dustin Cummins earned the win after throwing five solid innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two SHU hitters.

  • Madonna finished with 26 total hits as a team, which was second-most in school history along with the runs scored.

 Game 2:

The bats stayed hot for game two, despite the rain and temperature drop that came through the Madonna Athletic Complex. Anthony Sharkas got the scoring started for Madonna with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. After the Saints scored twice in the top of the second to tie the game, Madonna took the lead for good in the bottom half thanks to RBI singles by Sharkas and Nick Krol

The Crusaders blew the game open in the third inning with seven runs, including a Matt Staelgraeve three-run home run. Madonna also got back-to-back RBI triples by Sharkas and Alex Garbacik, while Beadle added his second two-run home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Madonna never looked back following the eight-run fifth inning, as they cruised to the mercy rule victory.
