Madonna Rolls to Home Opening Victory

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University baseball team rolled to a 12-2 victory over WHAC opponent Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday from Illitch Ballpark. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders jumped on the Wolverines with a run in the bottom of the second and seven more runs in the third inning. The third inning was highlighted by a Jace Matkin two-run home run and a two-run triple by Alex Garbacik. Madonna took an 8-0 lead after three innings of play. 

The fifth inning saw Madonna add three more runs to its total, before a solo home run by Aaron Sexton made it 12-0 and capped the scoring for the Crusaders. UM-Dearborn scored twice in the top of the seventh, but didn't get any closer as Madonna moved to 3-0 in WHAC play. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS;
 
  • Victor Mencotti got the start on the mound, throwing five innings and recording six strikeouts in the win. 
  • Madonna also used two relief pitchers in Dustin Cummins and Garrett Kerr. 
  • At the plate, Anthony Sharkas was 2-of-4 with three RBIs to lead the Crusaders. 
  • Matkin, Garbacik, Zachary Beadle, Brady Krzciak, and Kyle Revere all recorded a multi-hit game.
  • Madonna finished with 15 hits while only holding the Wolverines to just five.
