Crusaders go 2-2 at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. - The Madonna University baseball team went 2-2 this weekend against Indiana University Kokomo and University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Madonna is now 3-5 overall early in the 2023 season.

Game 1:

Madonna took on USF in the first game of the weekend on Saturday and fell 4-2. The Cougars scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third before the Crusaders answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Zachary Beadle singled home Bobby Cavin for Madonna's first run, before Beadle himself scored off a passed ball.

USF however scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off the Crusaders in the top of the seventh to take the victory. Madonna went down in order in the final frame.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • On the mound Riley Vermander got the start for Madonna and went 4.1 innings, striking out four.
  • Vermander was relieved by Victor Mencotti (0-1), who pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Crusaders.
  • Beadle was the only Crusader to record multiple hits.

Game 2:

In the Crusaders second game of the weekend, they took on host Indiana Kokomo Saturday night. This time Madonna came out victorious by a final score of 4-2. After IUK scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second, Madonna answered with a three-run home run by Jace Matkin in the top of the third inning, scoring Anthony Sharkas and Alex Garbacik.

Madonna added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Kyle Revere hit an RBI triple that scored Beadle. The Crusaders then retired the Cougars 1-2-3 in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to earn their first win of the weekend.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Nate Blain (1-0) had a solid start on the mound for Madonna, going six innings and recording six strikeouts. His biggest strikeout was in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded, two outs, and Madonna only up a run. That ended any hope of a comeback for the Cougars.
  • Sam Assaf then came in for the Crusaders and slammed the door, earning the save after throwing just 16 pitches in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The top four Crusader hitters in the lineup all had a hit.

Game 3:

The Crusaders came back Sunday and took on IU Kokomo again, this time rolling to a 10-4 victory over the Cougars. Madonna scored the first three runs of the game in the first inning, including a two-run double by Beadle that scored Matkin and Sharkas. They would blow the game open in the top of the second by scoring five runs, highlighted by another two-run double by Beadle.

Madonna used the early momentum on offense to cruise to victory, adding two more runs in the top of the third and seventh innings.

Game 4:

The final game of the weekend saw Madonna take on USF again. Aided by a seven-run first inning and six-run fourth, the Cougars were able to defeat the Crusaders 14-2.
