Big Second Half Pushes Madonna to WHAC Semifinals

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University men's basketball team opened postseason play with a 89-63 victory over Lawrence Tech University in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference quarterfinals. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Madonna opened up an eight point lead early in the opening half after a Deric Murray layup. The Blue Devils responded by going up 22-21 with 10:08 left in the first following an and-one. From there, the teams traded the lead, going back and forth down the floor. It was the Crusaders who opened up a six-point advantage heading into the halftime break, taking a 44-38 lead into the locker room. Mark Mettie had 10 points at the half to lead Madonna, while Andrew Rinn led LTU with 11. As a team, the Crusaders shot 48.3% from the field in the opening half. 

The second half proved to be all Madonna, as they outscored the Blue Devils 45-25 in the final period. A layup by Henry Speight extended the Crusader lead to 10 points, sparking a 7-0 Madonna run to start the half. Later, a three by Mettie and layup by Eian Barker made it a 18 point game, before a jumper by Speight grew the Crusader lead to 20 points. The Blue Devils tried to mount a comeback, but couldn't overcome a strong second half defense by the Crusaders. Madonna maintained its 20 point lead the rest of the way, and LTU never got within 15 points throughout the final 14 minutes of the contest. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Mark Mettie's 22 points tonight lead the Crusaders, he also finished with seven rebounds.
  • Speight added 14 points of his own, while Brendan Young, Devin Dunn, and Deric Murray had 11 each.
  • Mettie and Young led the Crusaders in rebounding with seven each. 
  • Madonna as a team shot 52.5% from the field and 43.5% from three-point range.
  • LTU was led by Andrew Rinn with 18 points, while Blake Lund posted 17.

Madonna heads to Lourdes University for the WHAC Semifinals at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 25th. Lourdes defeated Concordia Ann Arbor 107-66 tonight.
