Softball Goes 2-2 in Kentucky

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Madonna University softball team hit the road for a four game non-conference series against Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). The Crusaders earned a split in both doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

Game 1:

The host Blue Raiders struck right away with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Two more runs in the second and one run in the third inning made it 4-0 before the Crusaders got back in the game with a three-run home run by Emily Theisen in the top of the fifth. Madonna later tied the game when Autumn Reed singled home Alissa Gauthier. Lindsey Wilson responded with the deciding run in the bottom half of the fifth, and held on for the 5-4 victory. In the top of the seventh, Madonna had the tying run on base, but Gauthier lined out to shortstop to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Theisen was 2-of-3 with three RBIs to lead Madonna.
  • Reed and Gauthier also had two hits each for the Crusaders.
  • Maeson Schlaud got the start on the mound, going three innings and allowing five hits and four runs. She struck out four Blue Raider batters.
  • Schlaud was relieved by Laci Harris (1-2) who took the loss after pitching three innings of relief and striking out six.

Game 2:

Madonna scored the first run of the game in the top of the second when Emily Biggott stole second and advanced to third on the throw, allowing Jenna Gilbert to steal home and give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. The next inning saw Theisen hit her second home run of the day, this time a two-run blast to make it 3-0. Madonna wasn't done however, and Jessica Dunkel hit a solo shot to make it 4-0 Crusaders after three innings.

Following a two-run home run by the Blue Raiders in the bottom of the fourth, Madonna responded with two runs of their own to make it 6-2 in the fifth. Gilbert hit a two-run single and brought home Reed and Theisen. Lindsey Wilson did all they could to get back in the game, scoring one run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Madonna was able to use the strong start to earn the 7-4 victory, even adding an insurance run in the seventh inning thanks to a Bailey Martin RBI single.

The next scoring didn't come until the top of the fifth inning, when Dunkel hit a solo home run to make it 4-1 Madonna. Lindsey Wilson responded with a five run bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 6-4.

In the top of the sixth, Gauthier singled home Toth to make it a one-run game, before Autumn Reed hit a sacrifice fly to tie it at 6-6. After both teams failed to score in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, Lindsey Wilson was able to load the bases and draw a walk, allowing them to steal the 7-6 victory.
