LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University men's basketball rolled to an 88-49 victory over the visiting Concordia University Cardinals on Wednesday night. The Crusaders moved to 13-6 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and maintained third place in the standings with just one regular season game remaining. During the game,
Mark Mettie became the all-time leader for rebounds in a career, passing Chris Dierker (2014-18). Mettie now has 913 rebounds and counting in his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Madonna started the game by scoring the first four points thanks to layups by Henry Speight and Blake Banks. It was the Crusaders who dominated the first five minutes of the game, jumping out to a 21-7 lead at the first media timeout. The visiting Cardinals did all they could to stay with the hosts, but Madonna's size and strength proved to be too overwhelming. A three by Devin Dunn put the Crusaders up 20 with under four minutes left in the opening half, as Madonna took a 46-24 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the lead grew to nearly 30 points after a layup in the paint by Speight. Madonna eventually got the lead up past the 30 point mark, thanks in part to 11 second half points by Ryan Nunn. The Madonna defense put on a masterful performance tonight as well, holding the Cardinals to under 30 points in each half on their way to a huge conference victory.
