Men's Soccer powers past Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Madonna men's soccer team earned a 3-0 road conference victory over Concordia University Ann Arbor on Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders are now 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in WHAC play, while the Cardinals fall to 1-9-3 overall and 0-4-2 in the WHAC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The scoreless draw was broken in the 26th minute, as Corey Matthews assisted Daniel Watkins for the freshman's fourth goal of the season. Later in the first half, Ryota Nakajima scored his first goal of 2023, and Madonna went into halftime up 2-0. The Crusaders played solid defense in the opening 45 minutes, as the Cardinals were only able to manage two shots compared to Madonna's 12. 

Concordia was limited to just two shots in the second half as well. Ryushin Hirami scored the final goal of the contest for Madonna in the 67th minute of play, thanks to an assist from Nakajima. The Crusaders overwhelmed the host Cardinals as they cruised to victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Madonna outshot CUAA 27-4. The Cardinals were only able to get two shots on goal, while the Crusaders finished with 16 shots on goal. 
  • Afonso Henrique made two saves for the Crusaders in 17 minutes, before being relieved by Nathan Lamberti
  • Kyri Wixom made 12 saves for the Cardinals.
  • Madonna has now won 13 straight matches against Concordia. 

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders return home to host Rochester University at 3:00 PM Saturday.
