Crusaders Struggle in Season Opener

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University football program opened its 2022 season against Ave Maria University (Fla.) on Saturday at Livonia Churchill High School. The visiting Gyrenes came out fast with three touchdowns in the opening quarter en route to a Crusaders' 53-0 loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Madonna won the toss and elected to kickoff to begin the game. Ave Maria got on the board just 1:31 into the contest with a 47-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Kristian Marks to Brock Summers. After the PAT failed, the Gyrenes took a 6-0 lead. 

Later in the quarter Ave Maria found the endzone again with a one-yard rush by Quino Mauricette. Marks added his second touchdown pass when he found Joshua Jenkins from 20-yards out to make the score 20-0 after one quarter. The Crusaders had a chance to put points on the board in the first with a field goal by William Stoyanovich, but the Gyrenes Brunel Desinor was able to block it.

In the second, Bryan Stiemke found the endzone with a two-yard run to make it 27-0. Madonna quarterback Arthur Brantley IV responded by driving the offense down the field, but his pass was intercepted in the endzone by the Ave Maria defense and allowed the visitors to take a 27-0 lead into the halftime locker room. 

The third quarter saw Ave Maria add three more touchdowns to the scoreboard, including two by running back Stiemke, before the Gyrenes completed the scoring in the fourth quarter with two field goals. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Brantley completed 11-of-17 passes for 102 yards while running 15 times for 68 yards to lead Madonna.
  • Josh DePaulis also saw action at quarterback for the Crusaders.
  • Allen Fordham had three catches for 40 yards, while D'vonta Garrett hauled in two receptions for 33 yards.
  • On defense, Dalen Cobb recorded 10 tackles, while Carl Ware had nine. 

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders hit the road for the first time in 2022 next Saturday at No. 5 Marian University(Ind.). Kickoff is set for 1:05 PM in the opening game of MSFA Mideast Conference play.
