LIVONIA, Mich.-- The Madonna University softball team won both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Indiana Institute of Technology with a score of 2-1 in each game. This was the first day of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play for both teams.

GAME 1 - HOW IT HAPPENED

After a slow start, falling behind 1-0 and going hitless for the first three innings, the Crusaders struck in the top of the fourth inning. Veronica Pezzoni led off the inning with a single and a steal of second, and was advanced to third from a bunt from Chylece Cluck. Kattie Popko hit a home run, her third of the season, to push the Crusaders ahead 2-1. That would be all the offense Madonna would need to pick up the win, 2-1.

The Crusaders were led on the mound by ace Maeson Schlaud, who pitched her fifth complete game of the season. After allowing a run in the first, Schlaud shut the Warriors out for the rest of the game, and only allowed three hits while striking out eight during her seven innings of work. She earned the win, moving her record to 7-0 on the season.

GAME 2 - HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders got off to a quick start in game two, with Pezzoni scoring on a Alissa Gauthier double to open the scoring at 1-0 in the top half of the first. Madonna added another in the second inning, with Jenna Gilbert scoring on an Amy Clegg double.

The Warriors would score their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, and the Crusaders would earn another 2-1 win, thanks to the arms of Jane Anderson and a relief appearance from Schlaud. Anderson earned the win, her second of the season, going five innings only allowing one run (unearned). She struck out four hitters, and issued no walks. Schlaud earned the save coming in for the sixth and seventh innings, only allowing one hit while striking out three.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Pezzoni is on a 17-game hitting streak dating back to last season
  • The Crusaders are on a 10-game winning streak
  • The Madonna pitching rotation has a total ERA of 1.15 in 2022

Friday's doubleheader with Miami University-Hamilton (Ohio) has been canceled. The Crusaders are in action in a doubleheader Saturday at home against University of Michigan-Dearborn, with games at noon and 2:00 PM.
