Football upended by Lawrence Tech

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University football program fell to rival Lawrence Tech University 38-10 on Saturday from Churchill High School in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast League showdown. It was homecoming weekend on the campus of Madonna University and the game was included in the festivities.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The visiting Blue Devils opened with the ball, but were unable to do anything on offense as the Crusader defense forced a punt. Following that Madonna put together a huge 20 play 69-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard field goal by William Stoyanovich. That drive ended with five seconds left to play in the first, and Madonna led 3-0 after the opening quarter.

In the second, Madonna extended their lead to 10-0 when Josh DePaulis found D'Vonta Garrett from four yards out for the touchdown. It capped off an eight play 80-yard drive that lasted just over four minutes.

Lawrence Tech responded with a touchdown of their own, when quarterback Tyler Kulka found Ben Meathe in the endzone to make the score 10-7 with 31 seconds to go in the half. That ended up being the score as both teams headed into the locker room.

On the opening play of the second half, the Blue Devils took the momentum when they forced a DePaulis fumble and Christian Broad returned it 40 yards to the endzone, making it 14-10.

The lead grew to 21-10 when Kulka found Kendyl Williams for a two-yard touchdown reception. Later in the period Kulka found Williams again from 12-yards out to make the score 28-10.

A 33-yard field goal made it 31-10 at the end of three quarters, before Kulka ran it in from 11-yards out for the final score of the game early in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • DePaulis was 7-of-10 for 73 yards and one touchdown toss.
