Madonna Sweeps Julie Martin Memorial Classic

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Madonna University's Volleyball team completed a sweep of its opponents Saturday at the home Julie Martin Memorial Classic with wins over Roosevelt University (Ill.), Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), and Spring Arbor University (Mich.) at the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena. 

Game 1 vs Roosevelt, W 3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Madonna kicked off a 5-0 run behind Katie Engelhardt's service ace. Jodie Kelly and Brigette Vanderham finished the set for a roaring 25-12 set one win. Things were much the same in set two through both teams went toe-to-toe with each other before Madonna broke out on a 5-0 run propelling the Crusaders to a 25-17 set two victory. In the third set, things got dicey as the Lakers  went on a small run deep in the set. Madonna's Kacie Stoneburner and Molly Miller were able to put Roosevelt away.

Kelly was the team's kill leader as well as the only Crusader with double-digit kills with 11. Stoneburner had a team-high 13 assists. 


Game 2 vs Calumet, W 3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crimson Wave surprised Madonna in the first set with things getting tight at 13-8 before Madonna rattled off a 6-0 run with CCSJ attacking errors and Olivia Sweeney service aces. One final service error by Calumet gave Madonna the first set win at 25-15. The second set saw Jordyn Dawson, Jaeda Porter, and Natasha Strezelewicz kick things off to help Madonna sail to a comfortable 25-14 set two win. Madonna had to fight through a deficit in the middle of the third set finding itself down by one at 14-13. Kelly and Emily Stewart elevated the Crusaders to the final set one at 25-18 on Friday.

Kelly and Stoneburner with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Dawson had a double-double in assists and digs with 20 and 12. 


Game 3 vs Spring Arbor, W 3-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

Madonna's Kelly, Sweeney, Vanderham, and Stewart helped Madonna jump out to an early advantage as the Crusaders cruised to a 25-14 first set win. The second frame was a different story, however, as Madonna was behind the entire set before roaring back behind a few attacking errors by SAU to get a 25-24 lead. The Cougars then rattled off three straight for the win 27-25. The third set had Madonna playing down the majority of the set as Spring Arbor's 6-0 run gave them the win at 25-20.

Spring Arbor jumped out 4-0 in the fourth with Madonna having to fight back once more, eventually taking the lead behind Miller's kill at 15-14. The Crusaders then hit a 7-0 run to go on to win the fourth 25-20. In the final set, a block heard around the world by Vanderham and DJ Sargent finished off the Cougars. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Kelly held a game-high 25 kills as Madonna held a 27.6% attacking percentage. Dawson and Stoneburner held 27 and 26 assists, respectively.

The Crusaders will return to the floor in Dearborn, Michigan on Wednesday, September 8 where it'll open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play against University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7:00 p.m.
