LIVONIA, Mich.- The Madonna University baseball team returned home for their final three-game homestand of the 2021 regular season on Wednesday afternoon when they went up against the Racers from University of Northwestern Ohio. Â
GAME 1
TURNING POINT
- A four run sixth inning for the Racers gave them their second lead of the game as they took hold of the game 7-4 at that point. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNOH would grab the 3-0 lead after the first and second innings as they would score twice on wild pitches and once on a ground out.
- The Crusaders would take a run back in the bottom of the third inning as Adrian Reed would double to left field and score Joey Pejuan.
- In the fifth Madonna would tie the game at three after Reed would deliver again with a triple, scoring Pejuan, and Jace Matkin would bring in Reed on a single to center field.
- The Racers though would take command of the game with a four-run top of the sixth as they wound up scoring four runs after two singles, one with the bases loaded.Â
- Heading into the final inning, UNOH would put up a seven spot, taking advantage of a three-run home run, three singles and a wild pitch.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- Two Crusaders grabbed three hits in the afternoon as the top two in the lineup would deliver in Pejuan and Reed.
- Madonna batters ended up walking five times throughout the first game.Â
TOP PERFORMERS
- Reed would hit .600 on the game, going 3-5 with a double and a triple while hitting in two runs and scoring one himself.
- Pejuan had a good day at the plate going 3-4, with three singles and scoring two runs.
PITCHING DECISION
- Win: Carlsen (4-3)
- Loss: Mencotti (2-1)
GAME 2
TURNING POINT
- A six-run fourth inning would propel the Racers to the 12 run win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNOH got it started quickly again in the first inning scoring three runs on two hits, a single and a two-run home run.
- The Crusaders would take two of those runs back though in the bottom half of the inning as Matkin would hit Kyle Aniol on a single and Gordon Ferguson wound up hitting in Matkin on another single.Â
- That would be all though for Madonna as the Racers wound up scoring 12 straight runs to finish the game in seven innings. UNOH would use a home run, three doubles, and two singles to bring in those runs.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- Four different Crusaders would tally a hit throughout the game.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Ferguson led Madonna going 2-2 with an RBI.
PITCHING DECISION
- Win: Clavenna (7-4)
- Loss: Smith Jr. (0-1)
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will look towards the weekend as they will take on Concordia University Ann Arbor on Saturday May 1 with first pitch at 1 PM. The Cardinals are currently sitting atop of the conference standings.Â
