LIVONIA, Mich. -  The Madonna University Women's Lacrosse team grabbed its first victory of the 2021 season Wednesday afternoon with a 19-10 win against Cleary University in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.

Freshman Courtney Hoeland wasted no time getting the Crusaders' first point on the board, scoring off a free position shot 38 seconds into the match while freshman Aria Gettel followed up a little over a minute later for a 2-0 edge. The Cougars then went on a 3-0 run for its first, and only, lead of the game.

Junior Madeleine Caswell, junior Brittney Leist, along with Gettel combined to go on a 5-0 run before Cleary countered with yet another 3-0 run of their own. Junior Christy Battersby and Hoeland took the final two goals of the half as the Crusaders led 9-6.

The game continued with momentum swings as Cleary University hit the first two goals coming out of the locker room. Caswell, Battersby, and Rivera got three quick goals just above 20 minutes remaining as the Cougars broke up the streak. Leist hit back-to-back goals while Battersby sandwiched herself in another Leist goal as the Crusaders amassed a lead that the Cougars could never overcome.

Leist and Gettel, with two, rounded out the scoring for Madonna to end the game.
