Men’s Soccer drops heartbreaker to Saints in extra time

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 2, Aquinas College (Mich.) 3

BRIGHTON, Mich. – The Madonna University Crusaders traveled to the Legacy Center for their third consecutive game as they opened up their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season against the Saints of Aquinas College. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Saints controlled the first half of the game as they got off four of the first five shots as they were able to take a 1-0 lead at the 14:45 mark in the half. Issei Ito had the first shot for the Crusaders. 
  • The next best shot for either team came in the 44th minute off the foot of Ito but was saved by the Saints goalkeeper. 
  • The Saints picked up their second goal of the game in the 60:32 with a header off of a free kick from 20 yards out. 
  • The Crusaders would get a couple more shots off before Ito scored his first goal of the game in the 70th minute when he was able to finish off a loose ball in front of the net. Both teams would go back and forth for the majority of the game.
  • The Crusaders final opportunity came with 50 seconds left in regulation when Madonna got multiple shots off and Ito was once again able to get a goal after a couple deflections. The goal sent the game into overtime.
  • The Blue and Golds first and best opportunity came off the foot of Alexander Zaleczny but the Aquinas goalie made a diving save to save the game. Aquinas would score the game ender after Madonna's shot on goal. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Madonna won the battle of shots 15-12 and also gained more shots on goal 9-7.
  • The Crusaders also were able to take more corner opportunities throughout the game 5-2.
  • Madonna goalie saved four shots of the seven that he faced. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will once again return to the pitch on Wednesday March 3 against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University for a 7 PM kickoff.
