Men’s Soccer drops first match of season against Lancers

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 1, Grace College (Ind.) 4
Records: Madonna (1-1-0, 0-0-0), Grace (10-5-2, 3-3-2)
Location: Legacy Center, Brighton, Mich.

BRIGHTON, Mich.– The Crusaders traveled once again to the Legacy Center to face off against the Lancers of Grace College. The Crusaders struck first in the game, but from then on it was all Lancers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started the first 13 minutes going back and forth but neither could get a solid run at the goal. In the 15th minute the Crusaders scored their first goal of the game off of the foot of Caio Mazzo Nogueira. He was able to get it past the defense in part to a deflection off a Lancer defender. Ali Basma was in on the assist. 
  • From then on Grace went on a 4-0 scoring run that started with their own goal off of a corner kick in the 36th minute. Grace would score once more before the half in the 42nd minute off of another corner and a couple passes to take the 2-1 lead. 
  • The Lancers added on another goal in the 53rd minute after a Madonna foul, the Lancers played the ball quickly and were able to get a quick goal for the 3-1 lead. 
  • The final Grace goal came in the 78th minute when there was a long breakaway pass that the Lancers were able to score. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Crusaders were able to get off 13 shots, with six of those shots being on goal. 
  • Madonna goalies were able to save four shots that they faced. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will once again return to the Legacy Center on Friday February 26 when they open conference play against the Saints of Aquinas College with a 11:30 AM kickoff.
