Madonna Baseball’s ninth inning rally falls just short

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 4, #21 Bryan College (Tenn.) 7

BRYAN, Tenn.- The Madonna University baseball team opened their 2021 season with a trip to Bryan, Tenn. for what would be their first of three games throughout the weekend. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Jace Matkin started with a single. He would go on to steal second base and advance to third on a base hit and would score on an Adrian Reed single. 
  • Madonna extended their lead in the top of the third on a Gordon Ferguson home run to lead off the inning. The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.
  • In the bottom of the fourth the Lions would score with a two-run double. Both teams would go quietly in the fifth. In the sixth Bryan would once again tack on two more runs off of a couple singles. The teams would stay quiet until the eighth inning when the Lions would add on a couple more runs to make it 7-2. 
  • The Crusaders last chance came in the top of the ninth as they would look to mount a comeback. Joey Pejuan would single and then Noah Moore would come up to the plate and hit his first home run of the season with two outs in the inning. Alex Garbacik would end the game with a fly out to center field. 

TURNING POINT
  • The Lions scoring seven straight runs from the third to the eighth inning
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • 8: Eight different Crusaders earned a hit and were led by Reed, Ferguson and Moore who each had two. 
  • 3: The Crusaders had three extra base hits on the day, including two home runs and a double. 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Noah Moore - Went 2-2 and added a walk. Would bring in two runs in the ninth inning on a two-run homer. 
  • Gordon Ferguson - Went 2-5 with a home run in the top of the third inning. 
  • Adrian Reed - Batted in the Crusaders first run of the season with a single in the top of the second. 
  • Donovan Thacker - Started the game and threw three innings, gave up one hit and struck out six. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will face off against the Knights of No. 22 Middle georgia State University with a doubleheader tomorrow in Tennessee with the first game beginning at 11 AM.
