Men’s Soccer dominates Pilots in Season Opener

THE BASICS

BRIGHTON, Mich.– The Madonna University Men's Soccer team traveled down the road to Brighton, Mich. for their season opener against the Pilots of Bethel College (Ind.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders took the early 1-0 lead when Alexander Zalczny took a through pass from Kyle Tinnion and was able to get it past the Pilots goalkeeper for the first Crusader goal of the season. 
  • Ramon Rocha added the Crusaders second goal of the game, after the Pilots goalie initially came out and stopped the Crusader run, but Ali Basma was able to pass the ball and Rocha was able to get the ball into the open net. 
  • Both teams would battle it out until the halftime mark, as neither team was able to put anything in net. 
  • Ali Basma opened up the scoring in the second half quickly after he was able to take a shot from 20 yards out.  The final Crusaders goal came from Issei Ito on a penalty kick after he was tackled hard just inside the goalie box. 
  • The lone Pilots goal was in the 88th minute when Salifyaji Mugala got a ball five yards out and got it past the Crusader goalie. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Madonna was outshot by the Pilots throughout the course of the game 18-15, in addition Bethel also added more shots on goal. 
  • Crusaders goalies saved eight shots as opposed to the Pilots one.

  • The Crusaders will stay close to home when  they take on the Lancers of Grace College (Ind.) on Tuesday February 23 beginning with a 2 PM kickoff.
