Crusaders Rake in Maple Leafs for Overtime Win

GOSHEN, Ind.-- An overtime win will advance the Madonna University Men's Basketball team record to 4-1 on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders climbed back for a two point victory over the host Goshen College (Ind.) Maple Leafs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Starter Eian Barker broke the scoring seal for Madonna with the Maple Leafs already up 5-0 in the early minutes of the first half ahead of Devin Dunn with back-to-back baskets. Barker continued to do work along with Ryan McMullen and Mark Mettie as the Crusaders stayed within striking range all throughout the first half, heading into the locker room down by two at 33-31.

Goshen hit a shot to start off the second half at Mettie continued the chase once more through the majority of regulation. At the 13:42 mark, the Maple Leafs were up by 10 with Jalen Miller kicking things off for Madonna to start reeling in the white and purple jerseys. Young, Mettie, Ryan Nunn, and Ethan Emerzian began to chip away at Goshen's lead until the 4:57 mark saw Logan LePage hit a jumper to give Madonna its first lead of the game.

With 25 seconds left, Madonna was up by three as Goshen ran a layup to bring them back within one at 72-71 before the Maple Leafs fouled Emerzian, sending the freshman to the free throw line where he would hit one of two that allowed a shot from Goshen to fall through at the other end to send both teams to overtime.

Both teams would go blow-for-blow to start out the extra five minutes with the Crusaders up by two behind a Mettie free throw that preceded a solo Maple Leaf charity shot kept it a one point game. As Nunn was fouled on a shot attempt, the junior missed his first that gave Goshen a little life as he drained the next for the two points lead yet again at 83-81. The Maple Leafs ran the floor with 24 seconds on the clock, holding the ball until a missed three pointer that bounced off the back of the iron and bounce around on the floor until the final LEDs lit for the Crusaders' win.
