AVON PARK/LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Madonna University baseball team set out to defend its Warner University tournament title on Thursday afternoon, but dropped a pair of games to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) (3-2) and No. 2 St. Thomas University (Fla.) (3-1) at two different fields.
GAME 1
The Crusaders and Cougars met for the second time in three days and fared better the second time around, but still couldn't come away with the win as a fourth-inning home run proved to be the difference at Head Field in Avon Park.
MVNU score first in the second, but Frankie Lucska delivered a sacrifice fly in the third to plate Noah Renaud and tie the game. The Cougars added single runs in the third and fourth for the 3-1 lead. MU took advantage of a pair of MVNU miscues in the sixth, including an error on a strikeout, to cut the margin to one, 3-2, but could not get the two-out hit they needed.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 4: Both teams had four hits, while MVNU struck out four times and left four on base...four different Crusaders recorded a hit
- 8: The Blue and Gold struck out eight times and left eight men on base
TOP PERFORMERS
- Case Jaworski - took the loss, but pitched well as he allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walked one five innings
- Ross Rickel - allowed just one walk and got the final two outs for MU
GAME 2
Kyle Aniol and Adrian Reed combined for the first run as Aniol led off the third with a double and scored on Reed's base hit for the 1-0 lead at Warner Stadium in Lake Wales.
STU played small ball in the fourth as a leadoff double scored on a groundout then a leadoff home run in the fifth and three hits accounted for the 3-1 final.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 6-3: St. Thomas outhit Madonna 6-3 in the contest
- 2: Both teams left two men on base
- 9/1: The teams combined to strikeout nine times while the pitching staffs allowed just one walk on the day
TOP PERFORMERS
- Donovan Thacker - allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings with five strikeouts
- Noah Moore - only Crusader to reach base twice as he went 1-for-2 and drew a walk
- Reed - drove in the lone MU run
UP NEXT
- Madonna wraps up the round-robin play of the Warner University tournament on Friday, March 6 with another two-team, two-field doubleheader as they begin the day against Spring Arbor University at 10 a.m. at Head Field in Avon Park then face host Warner University (Fla.) at 6:30 p.m. at Warner Stadium in Lake Wales.
