JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Madonna University Baseball team stayed in Jacksonville, Ill. for the second day for two more games against the V-Hawks of Viterbo University. The Crusaders used two dominating starts, from
Nate Blain and
Daniel Gore to sweep the V-Hawks in overwhelming fashion 9-5 and 18-6.
GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders got going right away in the bottom of the first as they took advantage of a Viterbo error and Noah Moore hit a towering home run to left field for the early 2-0 lead. Madonna would score again in the second on a double steal. The Blue and Gold were able to put up three runs in the fourth hitting two extra-base hits and a sacrifice fly. Matt Staelgraeve came up in the fifth with the bases loaded and was able to find a gap in the outfield to clear the bases.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 6: The Crusaders had six extra-base hits in the game, with a home run, triple and four doubles
- 5: The Crusaders left five men on base as opposed to the V-Hawks four
- 4: The Crusaders were 4-4 on stolen bases on the afternoon
TOP PERFORMERS
- Staelgraeve - was 3-3 on the afternoon with two doubles, four RBI's and a run scored
- Moore - went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a run scored
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders once again struck early and often as Frankie Lucska hit a deep two-run home run to left field to get things started in the final game of the weekend. The Crusaders wouldn't let up after Joey Pejuan hit an RBI double, Gordon Ferguson came up to bat and hit the Crusaders second home run in the game in as many innings. Madonna would tack on six more runs in the third highlighted by Staelgraeve and Pejuan RBI single's and Lucska's second home run of the day and an RBI double from Adrian Reed. The fourth inning saw the Crusader's plate three more runs on an RBI double from Marcus Cipriano and a sacrifice fly from Ferguson. In the fifth, the Crusaders took advantage of V-Hawks fielding errors as they were able to snag three more runs.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- 14: The Crusaders were hitting the ball all over the field as they had 14 hits on the afternoon's second game
- 11: The pitchers were dominating as they struck out 11 batters and led by Gore with seven, Kevin Smith Jr. and Ryan Dusang added two strikeouts apiece
- 7: The Crusaders had seven extra-base hits including three home runs and four doubles
TOP PERFORMERS
- Lucska - went 2-3 with two home runs, a walk and tacked on five RBI's
- Gore - went five innings, struck out seven, allowed four base hits and one earned run
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will be on the road again next week as they will stop in Campbellsville, Ky. on their way to Florida for a three-game series against No. 25 Campbellsville University beginning on Friday, February 25 with the first game starting at 2 PM.
